Global Studies. Mapping Contemporary Art and Culture
The research project “Global Art and the Museum” has been running since 2006; I joined in 2009, and the first project I was (then still marginally) involved in was the “Contemporary Art and the Global Age” seminar and conference. In 2010, I co-organized “Global Studies“, a conference for PhD students working on art in the global context. More than twenty Essays from those who we had invited for the two events eventually became the book titled Global Studies. Mapping Contemporary Art and Culture; the third volume in a series of the research project’s publications. Edited, and with an introduction by me.

Opening “Von Ast zu Ast”
Sebastian Tröger, who had shown twice at Kunstraum: Morgenstraße, invited me to hold an opening speech for an exhibition he and Daniel Kiss had curated in Nürnberg with several academy students from Karlsruhe. As it was a fine exhibition, I did not have to talk about the art, and thus tried to elaborate on the notion of the “Ausstellung” [Exhibition] and if the word “scene” would not be more fitting in the context of contemporary art.

Maciej Jerzmanowski: “Spacer”
Maciej Jerzmanowski has been doing installative & performance pieces in 70s/80s Poland. I wrote a short text on one of his works for Kunstbriefe.de. It is called “Spacer” – “walk”, as in taking a walk; in my interpretation, a piece on the artist as actor (and agent) against the backdrop of the city and its institutions. Read my text here (in German).
The Daniel Libeskind Research Studio
In 1999-2003, Daniel Libeskind held seminars at the HfG Karlsruhe. While the seminars were labeled as “Architecture”, they were actually on learning how to initiate and execute a project; on finding out what you want to do, and finding the best way how to do it. Also, these were very good seminars. Andreas Voigt, Libeskind’s assistant – and, later, guest professor at the HfG – plus several veterans from the seminars have published a book on the Libeskind years. It’s 300 pages in color, showing 40 projects by students, and brilliantly designed by Sahar Aharoni and Adrian Krell. There are a couple of pages on my own project Fear of Machines, and I was even allowed to write one of the forewords. You can buy the book in the ZKM Bookshop.
Prora
I wrote an introduction for Annabel Angus & Jan Zappe’s exhibition on the Nazi era seaside resort Prora. You can read the German text and see some photos of the exhibition by Wojciech Sztaba on Kunstbriefe.de.
Wikipedia & the Arts
For a 2007 conference at the Academy of Fine Art in Krakow, I wrote a paper on the representation of the arts in Wikipedia. I had just a couple of months of experience of the workings of WP, but the next years basically confirmed my theses (and finally killed my interest in participating). My impression is the following: Art as a field of knowledge is restricted to a quite small group of experts, who either lack the time or the interest to share their expertise in producing WP articles, as this would be a rather merit-less exercise; besides, WP articles can’t be based on original research, which makes writing there even less interesting for academics. This makes WP a playground for people with to much time on their hands and a specific agenda, like: Popularizing their own art, or at least attempting this, as having an “own” WP article does not guarantee that anyone will read it. Ever. Still, this leads to the phenomenon that at least the German WP lacks articles on dozens of prominent artists, while it is full of articles on artists outside the contemporary “canon”, whose articles are fervently defended by WP enthusiasts who – without any knowledge of the art system – think that an exhibition in a hotel and a review in a local paper make a “famous artist”.
The papers were published one year later in book form; there is also a downloadable PDF on the ASP’s website.

Blogging for “Directors Lounge”
I wrote a daily blog for 2007′s “Directors Lounge“, an annual indy film festival in Berlin. Films at night, a couple of hours of sleep in the morning, and writing up yesterday’s impressions in the afternoon: A rather good experience.

Dialoge über die Vielfalt der Welten
A piece I wrote on the works of Krystyna Damar & Wojciech Sztaba. You can find it in German on their website.
