Notes on Space in Kassel

‘Public art’ usually has to compete with a plethora of visual input, routinely ‘provided’ by advertising agencies and their clients. The project Notes on Space in Kassel, initiated by Eva-Maria Offermann, tries to both subvert this situation and put it in a larger context. A series of black & white photographs by artist Paul Kuimet shows public art from (soviet) Estonia: murals and mosaics adorning official buildings, often evidently mediating ideology through aesthetics – just as advertising does for neo-liberal capitalism. These photos were then presented on 30 typical billboards in Kassel, showing these images of images within a contemporary ‘western’ urban setting. I helped curating.
