“Niemals Täter gewesen sein werden”

When Vito Bica asked me to write a text for a catalogue of the critical poster project “Wir sind ein Volk“, I tried to tackle a peculiar phenomenon from contemporary politics in Germany: The neo-fascists’ outrage against being labelled as neo-fascists. Following Harald Welzer’s theories on the self-perceived ‘innocence’ war criminals, my suspicion is that this paradoxical renunciation is only part schizophrenia and mostly a – however subconscious – attempt to normalize extreme positions into everyday bourgeois life. (The title translates as: “Never going to have been a perpetrator”, only slightly less contrived in German)
