“In the Realm of the Insignifier”

The ZKM Karlsruhe has launched a huge arts festival called “Globale” on the occasion of the city’s 300th birthday. I visited the inaugural exhibitions by Tetsuo Kondo/Transsolar and Ryoji Ikeda and was particularly struck how both installations translated the idea of the sublime into our contemporary mindset – one by re-staging the historically rather unfortunate, imaginary conflict between ‘man’ and ‘nature’, one by inspiring our awe towards the incomprehensible mass of today’s datascape. I wrote a short review for terpentin, a new platform for art criticism from Switzerland.
