“Is The Contemporary Already Too Late?”
After the exhibition The Global Contemporary I had the chance to review my experience as a ‘museum person’ during a conference of the UK Association of Art Historians in 2012. As the corresponding reader From Museum Critique to the Critical Museum, edited by Katarzyna Murawska-Muthesius and the late Piotr Piotrowski, appeared in print in 2015, the written version of my paper comes from an even more distanced (critical?) position. Here, I’m trying to work out under which conditions a contemporary art museum can be considered ‘critical’ – both in regards to socio-political circumstances and its institutional peculiarities (which, of course, reflect and inform those circumstances). The rather programmatic title is a question posed by artist Thierry Geoffroy during the exhibition in Karlsruhe.
