“Bergstürze und brennende Wolken”

Vagabund Magazin 3 2014After becoming a minor expert on the 1806 Goldau landslide during the research for the “Images of Disasters” project at Heidelberg Uni, I co-wrote an article on early media representations of natural disasters with my colleague Noura Dirani for Vagabund magazine. The Goldau landslide remains regional history in Switzerland and was a rather prominent event in the early 19th century, with everyone from Goethe to Daguerre tackling the topic – a tragic catastrophe occurring within the mountain idyll came as a shock to the romantics, who had just established the Alps as a friendly, picturesque antipode to the conflicts of urban Europe.
