“Mensch. Natur. Katastrophe”
I was working at Heidelberg University in the project “Images of Disasters” from 2012-2014. The ‘finale’ of our project was an exhibition staged at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim, which opened in September 2014; in the exhibition, we presented over a dozen natural disasters throughout history – focussing on the human response, be it cultural, social or political. My main contributions were the sections on the now little-known Goldau landslide in 1806, which was a popular motif in 19th century arts from Goethe to Byron or Daguerre, and the San Francisco Earthquake & Fires a hundred years later. There’s also a pretty catalogue for which I wrote 2 1/2 essays.
